The times when I was swimming and needed to stop just to enjoy the tranquil beauty before me. It’s those moments that stand out when playing Beyond Blue. I loved this approach since it made it possible for me to focus on scanning all the underwater lifeforms and learning more and more about them. Beyond Blue treats this as a journey, so it’s conflict and combat-free, really allowing you to focus on the task of exploring the giant ocean in front of you. Now, this takes place slightly further in the future, but this isn’t an actual sim, but a relaxing adventure through the ocean. It’s a good loop that feels rewarding because of the experiences along the way. Once you are done, you can go back to the sub and check out info about the creatures you scanned. She works for a research team named OceanX, and you basically have a neat gameplay loop of going out for a swim scanning underwater creatures. In Beyond Blue, you play as Mirai, a marine biologist. Its emotional impact doesn’t reach the heights of the likes of Firewatch, and its limited gameplay may put some players off if they want something more substantial or challenging, but nonetheless this is a well crafted and calm title that proves its worth. Overall, Beyond Blue is an interesting game with some solid story strands to propel its underwater gameplay. Meanwhile, the gameplay itself still runs smoothly enough, meaning this can be a good option for those on the go after something a bit more highbrow. There is the typical drop off in graphical fidelity when in handheld mode, with draw distance drop having the most significant impact, but it doesn’t make the game worse for those anticipating it. It’s a neat touch, with the videos unlocking over the course of the game, providing a little more content for players to uncover.įrom the perspective of Nintendo Switch functionality, Beyond Blue works absolutely fine. ![]() There are also a few good extras to be found, including a suite of videos explaining more about the behavior and biology of aquatic life, as well as some about what it means to be an oceanographer in reality. Beyond Blue does have an eye on educating the player, whether it’s through ecology or through simply showcasing and categorizing all sorts of underwater creatures.
